Loyalty points are useful only when they fit your routine

Keep points only where you already spend. If a programme needs extra purchases, multiple reminders or a chase for expiry, it is probably not earning its keep.

In shortPick one or two programmes tied to purchases you already make, then check the conversion and expiry before treating the points as value. Do not change a normal purchase just to earn a small bonus.

Start with places you already use

Choose programmes attached to groceries, meals or services that are genuinely part of your week. A reward should follow a purchase, not create one.

Understand the redemption

Check how many points make a useful reward, whether there is a minimum conversion and whether vouchers have separate expiry dates.

Keep the list short

One or two programmes you remember beats ten that quietly expire. Turn on only the reminders that you will actually notice.

Do not chase a target spend

A bonus threshold can be attractive, but spending extra solely to reach it often defeats the value of the reward.

Review it every few months

If a programme no longer fits your routine, stop giving it mental space. The points you do not earn are not a loss.

What to remember
  • Use rewards for routine spending, not invented spending.
  • Check conversion and expiry before treating points as money.
  • Fewer programmes are easier to use well.
